"There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
I have often wondered on this verse. In the Orb Pulpit Trilogy I played with the idea that Fiends or rather fallen angles came to earth. This idea added with the many other myths and stories of ancient civilizations of heroes and gods. Could these "men of renown" be talking about Zeus, Hercules, Odin and Thor? Could there really have been men of power and special abilities. Sons of fallen angels. Think about how much impact a giant would have in the time of edged weapon warfare. Think about how much influence a leader would have with knowledge of the cosmos in a time of simple understanding and controlled and limited literacy? Many biblical scholars struggle with believing in these passages and what they must mean.
I think this must have been one of the reasons God sent the flood. Not just the evil in the world. Not just the Sodom and Gomorrah of sin that had spread widely. But the massive influence and power these men were bringing to men and women. And with their influence, they could have brought a non-faith, non-God loving teaching. It would have been their self promotion of their own importance. Leading them to eventually like Julius Cesar claim to be "Divus julius, the god emperor, the Devine leader.
